Detailed Description of the EcoGuard Solution

EcoGuard is a bio‑based, sustainable formulation developed by students of Enactus Tunisia (Tunis Business School) to protect Tunisia’s date palms against the pest known as Boufarwa, a destructive mite. Rather than relying on synthetic acaricides (which are costly, potentially harmful to the environment, and leave chemical residues), EcoGuard offers a natural alternative using essential oils extracted from local plants.

Key features of the solution

  • The formulation has acaricidal (mite‑killing) and repellent properties, effectively reducing Boufarwa populations.
  • It is designed to be safe for humans, non‑toxic for pollinators, and without harmful residues — which makes it more environmentally and agriculturally sustainable.
  • The raw materials are locally sourced, making the solution scalable and more economically viable for rural and oasis farming systems.
  • Early field trials (in date plantations) supported by Boudjebel show promising results: reduced mite infestation, good tree health, no observable phytotoxicity, and preservation of beneficial fauna in the ecosystem.
